The Story of St. Sava: Inspiring Faith Through Generations

Saint Sava is a name deeply cherished in the hearts of Serbian Orthodox Christians. Known as the first Archbishop of Serbia and the spiritual father of the Serbian people, his life is a testament to unwavering faith, selfless love, and tireless service to God. When retold for children, his story offers a beautiful glimpse into the virtues of kindness, devotion, and courage that shaped an entire nation.

Born as Rastko, the youngest son of Stefan Nemanja and Ana, Saint Sava was destined for greatness. He exhibited a profound love for prayer, books, and spiritual learning from an early age. While his noble family envisioned a life of rulership for him, Rastko’s heart was drawn to a different kind of kingdom — one not of this world. When monks from Mount Athos visited his homeland, their tales of monastic life inspired him to leave behind the comforts of royalty and seek a life devoted to Christ.

On Mount Athos, Rastko embraced monasticism, taking the name Sava. His transformation was not just a personal journey; it inspired his parents to renounce their thrones and join him in monastic life, becoming known as Saint Simeon and Saint Anastasia. Father and son rebuilt the Hilandar Monastery, which remains a spiritual haven for Orthodox Christians today.

Acts of reconciliation and unity marked Saint Sava’s life. He mediated disputes between his brothers and brought peace to a divided land. As the first Archbishop of Serbia, he established churches, schools, hospitals, and monasteries, tirelessly working to enlighten his people. His travels to the Holy Land and beyond elevated his status as a saint, like the Apostles, spreading the light of Orthodoxy wherever he went.

Even after his repose in 1235, Saint Sava’s legacy endured. His relics became a source of spiritual strength for the Serbian people, and though they were tragically burned during persecution, his spirit could not be extinguished. Today, Saint Sava remains a symbol of faith and resilience, and his prayers and love continue to guide his people.

The Department of Religious Education of the New Gracanica Serbian Orthodox Diocese is bringing Saint Sava’s remarkable story to life in a new children’s book, The Story of St. Sava Retold for Children. This beautifully written and illustrated book introduces young readers to the inspiring life of Saint Sava in a way they can easily understand and connect with. The book will be available for purchase starting January 20, 2025.
